Three tips to maintain your rugs

Keen followers of this blog will remember that we recently touched on how to effectively clean and maintain fine Persian and shag rugs through a thorough rug wash.

In this article, we’re going to once again discuss perfect tips for rug care, particularly wool and nylon rugs.

Despite their similarities to Persians, they require a vastly different cleaning method, and below, we’ve listed a few things that you can do at home to help maintain your rug.

Avoid water at all costs

Rugs are often decorated in vivid colours and patterns, similar to their more famous counterparts, and this is another area of concern to pay attention to.

They are particularly tricky to clean as a result of their fascinating and elaborate patterns, where an excess of water used may bleed the colours, ruining the rug permanently.

Should there be a stain, it is important to remove it as soon as possible using a soft and highly absorbing cloth, to soak away the stain itself.

As many coverings are made from a thicker fabric, it is important to avoid using a heavy brush at all costs, as this will create a cornrowing effect that will severely impact the overall look of your rug.

Vacuum frequently

Due to the thickness of these types of surfaces, and the high foot traffic that they experience, their fibres are perfectly suited to trapping dirt, dust, and other types of soils.

This, unfortunately, is not a good thing, as an excessive build-up of these soil particles can create potential health hazards in the future, on top of appearing to be permanently dirty, no matter what you do.

Vacuuming on a regular basis is one way to minimise the build-up of this dirt, however, it is not a direct substitute for professional steam carpet cleaning, as the vacuum will struggle to remove all of the particles.

Air the rug on a regular basis

Whilst modern carpets have immensely benefited from a refined manufacturing process, which has aided in the removal of volatile organic compounds, the same can’t be said for other surfaces.

These types of fabric may still be emitting VOC’s, especially if you’ve had them for a long period of time, and must be cleaned and treated almost immediately.

One way you can help slow the emission process is to regularly air out and shakes your rugs outside. By doing this, you are minimising the overall effects of VOC’s, albeit not removing them completely.
